Christina Schlachter - Top Ten
1. Our second son is from Ethiopia and as I held him in my arms for the first time, I could not help but think - I wanted to take every child in the orphanage home with me. Knowing this was not realistic (although I did ask my husband if we could), I became involved with Every Child is My Child, which provides scholarships to children in Africa to attend school, which is prohibitively expensive.
2. Michael and I have two wonderful young boys, and our family embraces the Colorado lifestyle. In the winter, we are on the ski slopes almost every weekend and in the summer are avid cyclists. After meeting Cadel Evans at the Colorado Pro Challenge Tour, our boys zoom up our driveway and pretend to be professional cyclists nearly every summer night!
3. One of my favorite things about being Mrs. Colorado International is seeing my family involved in community service. This year my husband became a pilot with the all-volunteer Civil Air Patrol, and my older son and I started an elementary school literacy program called Junior Journalists, which is run as part of my Fellowship with the Institute for Social Innovation. Seeing my family give back is incredibly rewarding.
4. The spirit of athletic competition is a common theme in our family. My husband and I met competing during the Ironman Lake Placid race. Since then we have both finished our second Ironman competition, he supported me during my solo 9-mile Maui Channel swim, and our kids– ages 7 and 5 - have completed a total of 7 triathlons! I race for Water.org, an organization that helps build sustainable water systems in Ethiopia.
